About the Authors
Anna Carolina Kähler de Moraes Barros is a Master's student at the Institute of International Relations of the University of São Paulo (IRI-USP), currently engaged in a research mobility program under Erasmus+ at the University of Groningen. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Law from the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) and a postgraduate degree in Human Rights, Social Responsibility, and Global Citizenship from PUCRS. She serves as Editorial Assistant at Boletim Acauã and Coordinator of Direito em Vida, a human rights outreach project focused on women. She is a member of the CNPq/UFLA research group on Law and Sustainable Development. Anna is a CAPES-funded graduate student and previously participated as an undergraduate researcher in the Institutional Voluntary Scientific Initiation Program (PIVIC). She was also a Brazilian delegate at the 22nd edition of the Youth Assembly at the United Nations.
Bruna Toso de Alcântara holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in International Strategic Studies from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), as well as a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). Her research focuses on cybersecurity, cyber diplomacy, and international security. She was a fellow at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) between 2019 and 2020, and took part in the European Union Cyber Diplomacy Fellowship in 2023.
Cristiano Capellani Quaresma Ph.D., Master's, and Bachelor's degrees in Geography from the Institute of Geosciences at the State University of Campinas, IG/UNICAMP, with a focus on Environmental Analysis and Territorial Dynamics. Currently, he is a full-time professor and researcher in the Program of Smart and Sustainable Cities Postgraduate Studies at the Nove de Julho University, PPG-CIS/UNINOVE. His research is dedicated to Environmental Analysis and Territorial Dynamics in urban areas, focusing on topics such as Socio-Spatial Segregation (URBE Journal), Urban Space and Democracy (GeAS Journal), Urban Mobility and Accessibility (Humanities and Innovation; RBGDR), Geotechnologies Applied to Urban Studies (Computers Environment and Urban Systems), and Ecosystem.
Cristine Koehler Zanella is a Professor of International Relations at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC). She is a member of the scientific committee of the Brazilian International Relations Association (ABRI) and coordinates the Global South Studies Group (GESG). She holds a PhD in International Strategic Studies from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and a second PhD in Political Science from Ghent University (UGent), Belgium. She also holds a Master’s degree in Latin American Integration, and Bachelor’s degrees in Law and in Economics, all from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). Alongside Professor Edson Jose Neves Junior, she co-organizes the International Relations and Cinema series and engages in joint projects, lectures, and extension courses that bridge International Relations and the Arts.
Daniela Vieira Secches has a PhD in International Relations (IR) from the Pontifical
Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC Minas). She earned her Masters in Political
Science from Masaryk University, Czech Republic, and holds undergraduate degrees in
IR from PUC Minas and in Law from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).
She coordinates and teaches at the Undergraduate Program in IR, and is a permanent
professor in the Graduate Program in IR at PUC Minas. She serves as a member of the
Brazilian Association of International Relations directive board (ABRI, 2023-2025). Her
areas of interest include Eastern European States, and discussions of theory and method
in IR.
Diego de Melo Conti is a professor and researcher at the Graduate Program in Sustainability at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Camp). Post-doctorate in Environmental Sciences at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). PhD in administration with study on local governance and aerial cities, by PUC-SP, having done a trainee doctorate at Leuphana Universität Lüneburg in Germany through the Sandwich Doctorate Program Abroad with a CAPES scholarship. Master in Business Administration from PUC-SP with research in the area of sustainability. As research topics, he works in areas related to Urban Planning, Sustainability and Public Administration, with works published in journals such as: The Journal on Innovation and Sustainability, URBE Journal, Humanities and Innovation, and Brazilian Journal of Development.
Edson Jose Neves Junior is a Professor of International Relations at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). He coordinates the Research Group on International Relations and Artistic Languages (GERILA). He holds a PhD in International Strategic Studies, a Master’s degree in International Relations, a specialization in History, and a Bachelor's degree in History, all from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Together with Professor Cristine Koehler Zanella, he co-organizes the book series International Relations and Cinema, and collaborates with her on various extension courses, lectures, research initiatives, and projects exploring the intersections between International Relations and the Arts.
Elaine Leão Inácio de Melo Andrade holds a degree in Food Engineering, a postgraduate degree in Business Administration, a Master’s degree in Business Management, and a PhD in Food and Nutrition. She is a specialist in the field of Food Defense, with over 30 years of professional experience in national and multinational companies across various sectors. Her academic experience includes teaching undergraduate courses in Nutrition, Gastronomy, Business Administration, and Human Resources, as well as postgraduate courses in Food Quality and Safety. In the corporate sphere, she began her career as a production process supervisor and later worked in quality control laboratories and product development in the food and beverage sector. She has held leadership positions involving coordination and support for HR subsystems, including HR indicators management, budgeting, performance and competency evaluations, succession planning, profit-sharing programs, social responsibility, training and development, personnel administration, benefits, and union relations. She was also responsible for the implementation of the eSocial system. Elaine has coordinated production, management, and quality teams, implemented process offices and BPMN methodology, and conducted mapping, design, and redesign of processes. She has experience in building strategic maps and Balanced Scorecards and implementing management models with performance indicators. She has also led ISO 9001 and 14001 certification processes and participated in study groups with Embrapa for updating the Self-Control Program (PAC). She is recognized for her leadership skills, practical and enthusiastic approach, and passion for sharing knowledge and learning continuously.
Enzo Lenine is Professor at the Department of Political Science, at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). He holds a PhD. in Political Science. He is currently the leader of the research group Methodos: Grupo de Pesquisa em Metodologia Política. He has published over thirty articles on political methodology, feminist international relations, rational choice theory and formal modelling, and hierarchies of knowledge in political science and international relations. His most recent papers have been published in Perspectives on Politics, Foro Internacional, Dados, International Interactions, Colombia Internacional, and Rationality and Society. He is currently working on the intersections between international relations theory and philosophy of science.
Fernanda Barasuol holds a Ph.D in International Strategic Studies from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. She was also a Visiting Researcher at American University, in Washington D.C., between 2015 and 2016. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) and finishingher postdoctoral research at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. She is also editor of Monções: Journal of International Relations. She specializes in International Relations Theory (focusing on theoretical perspectives from the Global South), and Brazilian Foreign Policy.
Frederico Freire Fernandes has a degree in International Relations from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC Minas). Today he is a master’s student in the Department of Political Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. His current research efforts seek to discuss and analyze the relationship between Brazil and the liberal international order, with a focus on reflecting on Brazil’s membership status in international society following the country’s redemocratization and its relation with liberal ideology. His academic interests focus on crisis of liberal democracy, crisis of contemporary international order, Brazilian foreign policy and challenges to democracy in Latin America in comparative perspective.
Gilberto Carvalho de Oliveira is an Associate Professor at the Institute of International Relations and Defense at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and is a researcher at the UFRJ Laboratory for Security and Defense Studies. His research areas include international politics and security, with a focus on Critical Theory in International Relations, Aesthetics and International Politics, Critical Security Studies including securitization theory, and Peace and Conflict Studies. His work addresses themes such as peacebuilding, statebuilding, critiques of liberal peace, non-violence, civil conflict, and peace processes in Somalia.
Guilherme Ranoya has a PhD in Media and Audiovisual Processes from the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. He is also a Professor at the Department of Design and at the
Graduate Program in Design of the Pernambuco Federal University, Brazil.
João Montenegro Pires is a PhD candidate in International Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in the Republic of Korea. A career diplomat since 2000, he currently serves as Minister-Counselor at the Brazilian Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia. He has previously served at the Brazilian Embassy in Addis Ababa, where he held the positions of Minister-Counselor and Chargé d’Affaires a.i., as well as at the Embassy in Maputo. He completed the High Studies Course at the Rio Branco Institute with a dissertation on China’s presence in Africa. His diplomatic career also includes postings at the Brazilian Embassies in Seoul and Madrid. He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from Fluminense Federal University (UFF).
Lucas da Silva Tasquetto is a Professor of International Relations at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC). He coordinates the working group on trade, business, and investments of the Jean Monnet Module, hosted by the Brazil-European Union Institute at FECAP, and the working group on international trade of the Observatory of Foreign Policy and International Insertion of Brazil (OPEB) at UFABC. He holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Institute of International Relations at the University of São Paulo (USP). He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and held visiting research positions at King’s College London and at the School of Economics of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EESP).
Luís Gustavo Zimmer holds a degree in International Relations from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Florianópolis, Brazil) and is currently a second-year Master's student in Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). His research focuses on the field of Sociology of Religion, and his publications deal mainly with the global religious landscape, the intersections between religion and international relations, as well as religion and politics. He is interested in the different consequences of protestant political participation in Brazil, the conservative wave and religious public influence around the world.
Magali Favaretto Prieto Fernandes is a Ph.D. candidate in Law and Development at the São Paulo Law School of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV Direito SP) and currently a researcher at the Center for Global Trade and Investment (CCGI) at FGV’s School of Economics, a WTO Chair in Brazil. She holds an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from the Washington College of Law (American University, Washington, DC) and an LL.B. in Law and Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo Faculty of Law. She received the Mario Henrique Simonsen full scholarship from FGV and was also supported by the Postgraduate Support Program for Private Education Institutions (CAPES-PROSUP).
Marinana Andrade e Barros holds a joint PhD in Public International Law from Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and in International Relations from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC Minas). She earned her Master in International Law from PUC Minas, and holds undergraduate degrees in International Relations from PUC Minas and in Law from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). She is a Professor in International Relations at PUC Minas and teaches Law and International Relations at the Centro Universitário Una (Una). Her research focuses on international order, democracy, international organizations with an emphasis on Latin America, and paradiplomacy
Milena da Fonseca Azevedo is a Ph.D. candidate in Law at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil, and a fellow of the Ministry of Education’s Program of Academic Excellence (CAPES/PROEX). She participates in the WTO’s PhD Support Programme and holds a Master’s degree from USP and a Bachelor’s degree in Law from FGV São Paulo Law School. Her research focuses on International Trade Law, digital trade, artificial intelligence, regulatory standards, and investment. She is affiliated with the Center for Global Trade and Investment Studies (CCGI) at FGV EESP and contributes to the Global Law and Development Center (NDGD) at FGV São Paulo Law School. She is also a practicing international trade lawyer.
Mónica Salomón is an Associate Professor of International Relations at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Florianópolis, Brazil), acting at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She holds a Doctorate in Political Science from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where she taught International Relations from 1994 to 2006. She is also a researcher with the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento (CNPq). Between 2014 and 2020, she was one of the two coordinators of the Thematic Area "Foreign Policy" at the Brazilian Political Science Association's encounters. Her research and publications deal with different actors and levels of analysis (from subnational to supranational) of foreign policies. Her current work focuses on the intersections between gender and foreign policy.
Otniel Freitas Silva holds a degree in Agronomic Engineering from the Federal Rural University of the Amazon, a Master’s degree in Agronomy (Plant Protection) from São Paulo State University, and a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Minho, Portugal. He is currently a researcher at Embrapa Agroindústria de Alimentos and a permanent faculty member in the Graduate Programs in Food and Nutrition (PPGAN) at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) and in Food Science and Technology (PPGCTA) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). He is also a member of the Technical Group on Food Contaminants coordinated by Anvisa. His expertise lies in agronomy, with a focus on phytopathology and the safety of agri-food chains. His main areas of work include Brazil nuts, coffee, fungi and mycotoxins, post-harvest pathology, and food safety.
Patrícia Andrade de Oliveira e Silva holds a PhD and master’s degree in Economics Development, Space and Environment at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). She was postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Economics and International Relations at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). She graduated in Economics at PUCCampinas and is currently a Professor at Higher School of Advertising and Marketing (ESPM-SP). She is also a research group member at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of the Institute of Brazilian Studies at USP (LABIEB-USP). Participated as an Assistant Consultant at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO/Brazil) and an Assistant Researcher of Policies and Social Studies at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA). Currently, she is dedicated to research about socioeconomic development, public policies, international cooperation for development and gender policies.
Pedro Ivo Ribeiro Diniz is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) and the Cooperation Coordinator at the University's Office for International Relations (DRI/UFLA). He is a guest lecturer in the Postgraduate Program in International Law at the Center for International Law (CEDIN). He leads the Research Center on Law and International Relations (NEDRi) and the research group on Law and Sustainable Development, registered with CNPq. He was also a guest speaker for the course North-South – A World in Transition at Hasselt University, Belgium. He holds a PhD in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC Minas), a Master's degree in Law (CAPES-funded) from PUC Minas, a postgraduate specialization in International Law from Milton Campos Law School, and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from PUC Minas.
Pietro Carlos de Souza Rodrigues is a Lead Researcher at the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the José Luiz Egydio Setúbal Foundation and Full Professor and Chair of the International Relations Undergraduate Program at the Brazilian Institute of Capital Markets (Ibmec-SP). He is also an associate researcher at the Center for the Study of International Negotiations at the State University of São Paulo (CAENI-USP). He has a PhD in International Relations from the University of São Paulo and King’s College London, and a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of São Paulo. Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the International Postdoctoral Program of the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (IPP-CEBRAP) His current research interests include international development, public-private collaboration, philanthropy, business and society, and social innovation.
Rodrigo Kuestra Pereira holds a bachelor degree in International Relations (Federal University of São Paulo-UNIFESP), with CNPq scholarship, and Master’s in Smart and Sustainable Cities (Nove de Julho University), with CAPES scholarship. Acts as Project Manager at the REDI Institute, at the Circular Hub and at the Research and Development Hub, especially in the organization and analysis of data on reforestation, from the Copaíba Environmentalist Association, and in the implementation of the extension project “Mathematics and Inclusion”, from UNESP. He has several publications in scientific journals in areas related to International Relations (Technical and Scientific Journal Cidades Verdes), Environmental Sciences (Alta Paulista Environmental Forum) and Education (Dialogia Journal), all relevant to the research topics studied by the author, such as Paradiplomacy, Nature-Based Solutions and Educating Cities.
Thiago Rodrigues is a Professor at the Institute for Strategic Studies (INEST) of the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. He received his PhD in Political Science/International Relations from PUC-SP, Brazil/Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris III). Rodrigues is the head of the research group Security and Democracy in the Americas (SeDeAMERICAS/UFF) and a member of Niep-Marx (Group of Studies on Marx and Marxisms)/UFF. Rodrigues is a fellow researcher of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
Thiago Borne holds a B.A. in International Relations, an M.A. in Political Science, and a Ph.D. in International Strategic Studies, all from the Federal University of Rio Grande
do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. He was also a Fulbright Visiting Research Fellow at the William
J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies at the National Defense University from
2016 to 2017. Previously, he served as a Professor of International Relations at various Brazilian universities. Thiago currently serves as an international civil servant within the
UN system.
